Cybersecurity Laws Are Killing the 718 Cayman & Boxster 💻

Porsche

The only constant in life, is change. Our world is changing everyday, and with that comes new policies and regulations with the effort to make it a safer and better place to live. The UN Regulation No. 155 (UN R155), requires automakers to add specific cybersecurity protections to high-volume vehicles, which takes effect July 1, 2024.

Porsche has decided that it would be more cost effective to kill the Macan (combustion engine variant) and the 718 Cayman and Boxster before their EV replacements hit the showrooms. Any vehicles that are sold and don’t meet this new regulation, will not be eligible for registration.

As vehicles include more advanced electronics, driverless features and connect remotely to networks and the internet, it makes sense. If you’ve seen the Netflix movie “Leave the World Behind”, you know what I mean.

The last thing anyone wants is their car getting hacked, activated remotely and causing an accident that you may be responsible for.

Top Gear

The GT4RS and Spyder RS are safe due to the lower production quantities. I guess regulators aren’t afraid of the fastest variants getting hacked. Just when you thought EV regulations and climate change would kill one of your favorite cars, cybersecurity enters the ring.

If you have been receiving the weekly GRIP newsletter, you have probably seen the Porsche Mission R concept and the AutoEvolution EV rendering of the next 718.

AutoEvolution

How do you feel about electric sports cars? Does it go against every fiber of your being? Is the high-pitch whine of electric motors just too reminiscent of your PowerWheels back in the day?

What are values doing?

Used 718 Cayman and Boxster prices have been trending downward over the past month but have recently stabilized and even increased since the bad news. If you've been considering purchasing one, now is the best time.
