Suspension Party Tricks 🕺 & New Track Record ⏱️

Porsche has had a busy month. The Taycan Turbo GT was unveiled, breaking the Laguna Seca EV lap time record with a 1:27.87, and then set an impressive 7:07.55 lap time at the Nürburgring. The Tesla S Plaid achieved a 1:30.3 and 7:25.23 respectively as a comparison.

If there is any brand that does not want to see an all EV future, it’s the Stuttgart crest. Porsche still hasn’t forgotten about the Panamera. Now, the Panamera has a new Active Ride suspension that is great for party tricks but better for overall performance while improving the luxury ride.

This video demonstrates the active ride advantages nicely.

The new suspension utilizes an electric motor to regulate the hydraulic pressure in each damper. The motors are powered by the 400-volt battery system. This system provides enough force to effectively eliminate any body roll, pitch, and dive. This system also helps get rid of the anti-roll bars which reduce the benefits of having independent suspension in the first place. Anti-roll bars increase rigidity in a corner but reduce comfort levels by linking two corners.

Porsche Taycan Turbo GT

The Turbo GT badge is now a thing. Even though the car has zero turbos. Yes, some people hate the fact that Porsche is using the “Turbo” badge as a top tier trim level on their EVs, but the Turbo GT badge now means the car is bananas on a track.

The Cayenne was the first to receive the “Turbo GT” badge, and it did not disappoint.

Why Are Taycan Values Dropping?

According to Porsche, they sold 320,221 vehicles in 2023, which is a 3% increase over 2022, with 13% of those deliveries being the all-electric Taycan.

CarGurus data shows an overall drop in used car values. We can thank high interest rates and economic uncertainty for that, however, I think the general public has found that owning an EV is more expensive overall than ICE vehicles.

The Macan is only down $1,500 since January 2021, while the Taycan is down over 39% since then! Tesla Model S is only down 23.47% since January 2021 but after the introduction of the Plaid model, the average value has dropped 52.4%!

Let's be honest, the Taycan Turbo GT will spend more of its time going through Starbucks drive-thrus than hitting the track on the weekend. The real EV sports car from Porsche is still a concept. The Mission R.
